Life After LASIK: Tips for Maintaining Optimal Eye Health
&srotate=0)
There are few things that can truly be considered life-changing events overnight — but LASIK is one of them. With LASIK laser eye surgery, patients can literally go from having blurry vision one day to 20/20 vision — or better — as soon as the next day. Not only that, but the results of LASIK surgery are generally considered permanent, meaning patients can essentially enjoy a lifetime of clearer vision after their procedure. Still, there are some important things to keep in mind as far as maintaining your overall eye health after LASIK, both in terms of immediate post-LASIK care and long-term habits for preserving eye health and vision.
These include avoiding rubbing your eyes for at least 7 – 10 days after surgery, keeping up with your routine eye exams, and making healthy lifestyle choices. At Ophthalmology Associates of the Valley (OAV), our Los Angeles LASIK surgeons were the first in the San Fernando Valley to perform LASIK and have helped thousands of patients regain their vision in the years since, using only the most advanced technologies available. Take a closer look here at important tips for LASIK aftercare in the short and long terms to protect your eye health.
Is your vision clear right after LASIK?
Almost immediately after LASIK surgery, patients can expect some blurriness or haziness, which typically resolves after just 1 – 2 days, at which time patients can notice dramatically clearer vision. For some patients, hazy vision after LASIK may last longer and may be accompanied by other temporary LASIK side effects, including nighttime glare. In most cases, the results of LASIK continuously improve for about 8 – 12 weeks after surgery, though it can take up to six months for certain symptoms to resolve.
Is there anything I can't do after LASIK?
One of the most compelling benefits of LASIK eye surgery is that there is almost no downtime required, meaning patients don't have to take an extended period off work or their favorite activities for recovery. However, there are some postoperative restrictions to be aware of. First and foremost, patients should plan to return home right after surgery (with the help of a trusted driver) and take a 4 – 5 hour nap.
This helps avoid the urge to rub or scratch your eyes as the anesthetic wears off, which often causes an itching or stinging feeling. By sleeping after LASIK, you can "skip" this process. For the next 7 – 14 days, you'll still need to strictly avoid rubbing, scratching, or even lightly touching your eyes as they heal. We'll also go over additional post-LASIK restrictions, including swimming, submerging your head, and engaging in strenuous physical activities or contact sports.
How can I keep my vision clear after LASIK?
Once you've regained clear vision — and said goodbye to your glasses or contacts — you may be even more motivated to keep your eyes healthy. Some of the most important things you can do after LASIK, both for your vision and your overall eye health, include:
- Follow post-LASIK instructions closely
- Visit us for a comprehensive eye exam annually or as recommended
- Avoid excessive screen time and other sources of eye strain
- Wear protective eyewear as appropriate (sunglasses while outside, protective glasses during high-risk activities, etc.)
- Do not smoke
- Keep your other health conditions under control
With healthy habits and a proactive approach, you can set yourself up for better eye health now and in the future.
